Rejection: Embracing the unloved misfit of success

No one loves rejection. People don’t wake up in the middle of the night feeling thankful for it. But, shouldn’t we feel grateful for the “No’s” we receive? If we credit our experience of rejection with the negative, shouldn’t it also receive credit for our success?

Rejection can be life changing and come in a forms we recognize. It may be as simple as an off the cuff comment, like, “You’re artistic, not creative. The other girl in the class is more creative than you.” Or it can be a “Sorry, we’ve gone with another candidate.” Or even a college rejection letter beginning, “We regret to inform you.”

No matter what form it takes, embrace the suck. Something unexpected and better is on the way. Staying positive in the face of rejection is hard, but remember:

  • Accept that rejection is the other side of success. Then trust yourself to overcome, persevere, and prove naysayers wrong. Not everyone can or will lead to your avenue of success, but your unique qualities are what allow you to succeed.

Whether you think you can or you think you can’t, you’re right.

— Henry Ford
  • The mind is a powerful tool for success, providing thoughts that drive us to our future. Bring positivity inward, to see results reflected outward.
  • Not everyone can pursue their true passion. Rejection gives you the opportunity to improve and go after what you want.
  • Success isn’t immediate. Oprah Winfrey, Tina Fey, and Stephen King all achieved success later in their career after many rejections.

You can, you should, and if you’re brave enough to start, you will.

— Stephen King
  • Move forward through rejection and let it motivate you to become better.

If nothing else, find what brings you happiness and make time for it. For me, it’s reading, exercise, and puppies. While I’m not currently pet sitting, I follow plenty of French bulldogs on Instagram to get my fix.

What helps you stay positive in the face of rejection?
